The main reason women have breast reductions is to lessen pain and discomfort.
“Women with large breasts can have back, neck and shoulder pain, as well as shoulder indentations from their bra straps digging in,” Dr. Jeff Popp said.
“Often they can’t engage in regular exercise because their breasts get in the way.”
Two types of breast reduction:
Traditional: This requires cutting skin all the way around the breast. There is a lot of recovery time involved. There are more scars, the surgery takes longer and there are sutures and drains involved. Also, more complications are possible with this type of breast reduction.
Scarless: This procedure adopts liposuction techniques. Dr. Popp said three puncture holes are made around the breast. Since most breast tissue is fat, liposuction can suck the fat out and reduce the breast that way.
Scarless breast reduction’s biggest advantages include:
- Quicker surgery
- Faster recovery
- No stitches
- No skin is cut out
Its only down side is you may not get a lift to the breast.
“You can get some lift in many cases, depending on the size of the breast,” Dr. Popp said.
The only reason not to get a scarless breast reduction would be if you want to ensure perkiness, he said. That’s best achieved with the traditional breast reduction procedure.
Dr. Popp does a couple of scarless breast reductions each month and is the only physician or one of the few in Greater Omaha to offer the procedure.
“We’ve been doing it for maybe 15 to 20 years. The procedure has been written up in all the cosmetic and plastic surgery literature,” he said.
“I’m not sure why more doctors don’t do it. There are certainly fewer complications involved.”
